Before models walked the runway for Anna Sui’s Fall 2018 show, makeup artist Pat McGrath walked editors through the makeup look she created. Inspired by club girls with some ’60s and ’70s influences, Gigi and Bella Hadid were seen backstage with wet purple shadow etched along the sockets of their eyes and winged out like liner. Fuschia and orange shadows were lightly blended just above the purple arc near the inner corner, too, and a shimmery pink pigment was tapped on the center of their lids. Their lips were topped with the sold-out Pat McGrath Labs Lip Fetish lip balm, and their brows and cheeks were kept bare. “It’s all about that statement eye with a strong socket,” McGrath summed up the look as.
Back to that shimmery pigment, though. Someone asked McGrath what the glittery product was. “In fact, it’s a beautiful highlighter,” the makeup artist replied with her voice trailing off. “It’s exquisite.” But what highlighter is it? McGrath later told us, “You know what I mean without mentioning anything? Take notice…I supposed I could say coming soon.” She added that something on the models’ faces is definitely new. What exactly? She kept her lips sealed.
With that, I turned every model’s face into a game of CSI: NYFW. My brain is basically a beauty-product encyclopedia with a volume devoted to Pat McGrath Labs, so I knew something unfamiliar would stand out to me. I took a closer look at the shadows used. They seemed like the most obvious suspect since McGrath stressed the statement eye being the focus of the look. The deep purple, hot pink, or copper-y orange like the ones used on the models are yet to appear in any of the Mothership Palettes. Could the eye shadows be a part of an upcoming Pat McGrath Labs palette?
Something about the mysterious highlighter made my detective senses tingle, though. I kept going back to it and staring. The highlighter seemed to have a translucent base with a magenta shift. A similar formula was featured in the Liquilust 007 Kit. It comes with crystalline micro-fine pigments in gold and violet. I think a pink version might just be a part of Pat McGrath’s next sold-out kit. But that’s just a theory I have.
McGrath has been known to tease new Pat McGrath Labs products at an Anna Sui show. This time last year, she gave everyone a sneak peek at the Dark Star 006 Kit at the designer’s fall 2017 show. I think these teasers might become a tradition now. As for what this year’s upcoming product is, you might want to set notifications for when Pat McGrath posts on Instagram. An official announcement might be on its way later this week.
